In an embarrassingly awkward interview response that some online argued is an example of the reason that Vice President Kamala Harris has so far largely refused to do unscripted, sit-down interviews, Vice President and 2024 Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris was asked about the Trump Administration’s stance on DEI and gave a rambling word salad in response.
As background, VP Harris has not done a sit down interview since President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race in mid-July and named her as his preferred successor, kicking off her presidential campaign before the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Since that start of her campaign over a month ago, VP Harris has been questioned online and offline over her seeming unwillingness to do interviews.
In any case, Kamala was recently asked about former President Donald Trump’s resistance to DEI, with the reporter asking, “President Trump, if he gets a second term, will sort of dial back, for lack of a better term, DEI programs that the Biden administration has put forth; what do you think that would do to race relations in this country?”
Kamala, in response, gave a rambling word salad response about Martin Luther King Jr., the civil rights movement, and how she thinks Americans need to remember that history. Beginning, she said that Trump’s disdain for DEI is largely irrelevant because he won’t win, saying, “Well, let me say we’re gonna win, so it’s not gonna happen.”
Continuing, she then rambled about MLK Jr. and civil rights, saying, “Today, I believe, is the anniversary in terms of Dr. King, right? I was just in Selma, and we celebrated, well, acknowledged the 59th anniversary of Bloody Sunday. I think it’s really important that we as Americans always embrace our history, the parts that we’re proud of and the parts that we’re not proud of, but that we can’t forget.”
Watch her here:
Predictably, conservatives roasted Kamala on X (formerly Twitter) for her rambling word salad of a response. Kyle Becker, for example, said, “JUST IN: Kamala Harris gets caught flat-footed when a reporter asks her about Trump’s policies. *THIS* is exactly why Harris refuses to do sit-down interviews. She is so hard to watch.”
Continuing, Becker argued that Kamala is unpopular as a candidate because she doesn’t seem authentic or honest. He said, “Kamala Harris oozes dishonesty. She might be the least genuine person to run for the presidency. She was a horrible campaigner and nobody wanted to vote for her. But apparently, voting is no longer an issue for the “Democratic” party.”
Another commenter joked that Kamala is reminiscent of the kid in class at school who tried to write a book report without reading the book, saying, “No matter what is asked of her, she always answers like the kid who didn’t read the book before giving a book report. Long drawn out, yet meaningless statements, that never answer the question asked.”
Also, another agreed with Becker that the sort of rambling responses Kamala gives are why she is seemingly avoiding interviews. That commenter said, “This is why they keep Kamala hidden from reporters. She can’t answer without a script. She rambles, cackles, sputters vacuous inanities. This person must not be elected to be president. She’s simply not fit for the office.”
