Stephen A. Smith leaves Molly Qerim speachless with his impression of Patrick Mahomes’ behind-the-back pass-O

Stephen A. Smith shouts during the first half of the NBA All-Star...

Without a doubt, the most viewed video on social media this past Saturday was the spectacular behind-the-back pass by Patrick Mahomes during the preseason game where the Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Detroit Lions 24-23. The play unfolded in the first quarter at Arrowhead Stadium, with Mahomes tossing a behind-the-back pass to Travis Kelce for a first down. The rarity of such a play caught the attention of fans and quickly went viral across social media.

The play was discussed on today’s episode of “First Take” by Stephen A. Smith and Molly Qerim, with guests Dan Orlovsky and Shannon Sharpe. Smith questioned the excitement surrounding the play, saying, “I did not say it was not a good play or an impressive play. It’s a good play and all of that, but damn, he threw a behind-the-back pass two yards.” Following his comments, Smith humorously attempted to imitate Mahomes’ pass live on set, leaving everyone in the studio speechless.

Sure, the pass was short, but what did Smith expect-a behind-the-back pass for more than 10 yards in the NFL? That seems nearly impossible due to the unnecessary risks it involves. The play also garnered so much attention because it highlights the eagerness of fans for the regular season to start, which is now just under three weeks away, kicking off with the Kansas City Chiefs against the Baltimore Ravens on September 5th.

The Chiefs have suffered defeats in both of their preseason games against the Jaguars and the Lions. Although it’s only preseason, you’d expect the reigning champions to perform at a higher level, particularly on offense. In the last game, Mahomes completed 8-of-14 pass attempts for 93 yards, including the behind-the-back pass, but did not score a touchdown. Last season, Mahomes have his worst season in terms of productivity but still tallied 4,183 passing yards and 27 touchdowns on his way to securing his third Super Bowl victory.

The Chiefs are projected to secure their ninth consecutive AFC West title, just two shy of the New England Patriots‘ NFL record of 11. They are the clear favorites in their division, largely due to Mahomes’ impressive 30-5 record against AFC West rivals. If the Chiefs can secure home-field advantage in the highly competitive AFC, they will have a strong chance to achieve the first three-peat in NFL history. The Ravens, Bengals, Dolphins, and Texans are the top contenders in the AFC to challenge this historic run.
