New England Patriots legendary head coach Bill Belichick has been out of the job since the beginning of the year, when he and the Pats decided to part ways.
Those days are officially over.
After several days of negotiations, Belichick has reportedly “agreed” to become the next head football coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels.
The Guardian’s Ollie Connolly was the first to report that the six-time Super Bowl champion will be taking his talents to the sidelines of the Tar Heels to succeed Mack Brown after he was fired.
Connolly added that Bill Belichick handed the school a 400-page “organizational bible” with structure, payment plans, staffing choices, and other information.
He is expected to know the school’s decision “within 24 hours.”

Representatives from the university met with the eight-time Super Bowl winner last Thursday.
He last coached during his final season with the Patriots in 2023.
The last time Belichick interviewed for a coaching job was with the Atlanta Falcons regarding the team’s head coaching vacancy before Raheem Morris was eventually hired.
NFL Execs ‘Laughed at’ Bill Belichick, North Carolina Contract Rumors
Not many saw Bill Belichick possibly becoming the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels, but it appears we are on the heels of it happening.
Apparently, his interest in the job wasn’t taken seriously by NFL executives, according to Mike Sando of The Athletic.
“Some NFL executives also laughed at the idea,” Sando reported on Monday.
The 72-year-old has certainly shown them that he is ready and willing to coach.

Two teams that have long been viewed as potential landing spots for Bill Belichick reportedly aren’t candidates for the legendary head coach after all.
Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots parted ways after the 2023 season, following a historic 24-year run together. In a surprise development, Belichick was passed over in the 2024 NFL head coach hiring cycle.
The Atlanta Falcons were the only team that interviewed Belichick for their head coach vacancy. They ended up hiring Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, and Belichick was left without an NFL job for the first time since 1974.
The New York Giants, Belichick’s old team, and Dallas Cowboys have been rumored as possible suitors for the 72-year-old. However, ESPN’s Dan Graziano opines that neither team is a legitimate candidate for the eight-time Super Bowl champion:
“I also think there will be interest in Belichick. I don’t buy the idea of him in Dallas, where Jerry Jones is and always will be the GM and likes being the face of the franchise. And I don’t buy him with the Giants, who don’t know who their quarterback is going to be and have always kept their coach and GM in separate responsibility silos.”

You can never predict what Jerry Jones will do, but the Cowboys will presumably move on from head coach Mike McCarthy after the 2024 season. McCarthy is in the fifth and final year of his contract, while many expect the Giants to fire HC Brian Daboll after a second straight losing season.
Bill Belichick was on the Giants’ coaching staff from 1979 to 1990. As Bill Parcells’ defensive coordinator, Belichick helped the Giants to Super Bowl championships in the 1986 and 1990 seasons.
Realistic Landing Spots For Bill Belichick
If the Giants and Cowboys aren’t realistic fits for Belichick, there are still plenty other teams that should have them on their radar. As Graziano noted, the Jacksonville Jaguars could be an option with Doug Pederson likely on his way out.
The Las Vegas Raiders are an enticing option, now that Tom Brady is a part-owner there. The Chicago Bears will need to replace Matt Eberflus after another dismal season, and they should go big-game hunting for a top candidate like Belichick.
