Fans were treated last week to the first full trailer for the highly-anticipated Wonder Woman 1984 and while the titular Amazonian warrior used her iconic golden lasso to defeat a number of enemies, her sword and shield were notably missing, and star Gal Gadot has offered up an explanation for their absence.
While promoting the trailer for the upcoming sequel, Gadot revealed that director Patty Jenkins made a conscious effort to eliminate the weapons from the film.
“Wonder Woman does not carry a weapon,” Gadot said. “We had an intention to let go of the sword, because there’s something very aggressive with a sword. If you have a sword, it means you need to use it. So we wanted to give that up. And we didn’t feel that the shield was necessary either. She’s a goddess, she can fight, she’s super strong, and she has the skills. So no, she has the gauntlets. She has the lasso. She has her tiara and that’s about it.“
Fast forward to the 1980s as Wonder Woman’s next big-screen adventure finds her facing an all-new foe: The Cheetah. As previously announced, the film stars Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and Kristen Wiig in the role of the Super-Villain The Cheetah, as well as Pedro Pascal. Chris Pine also returns as Steve Trevor.
Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman, Monster) returns to direct the sequel, while Jenkins, Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, Stephen Jones, and Gal Gadot are producing the film. Rebecca Roven Oakley, Richard Suckle, Wesley Coller, Geoff Johns, and Walter Hamada are the executive producers.
Set to open in theaters June 5, 2020, Wonder Woman 1984 is based on the character created by William Moulton Marston, appearing in comic books published by DC Entertainment. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
