The A-lister’s Cannes gown puts a grown-up spin on the lingerie trend.
The sheer-dress trend might never die, but for A-listers at fancy festivals, something more sophisticated and less revealing is needed. Enter the exposed bra illusion, which Scarlett Johansson wore to the Cannes premiere of her new Wes Anderson flick, Asteroid City.
The superstar wore custom Prada to the event, a light pink column dress with what looks like a white thin-strapped bra peeking out from underneath. But look closer (yes, we are giving you permission to zoom in on her chest in the name of fashion) and you’ll see that it’s all one garment; the triangle tops are even embellished with beads.
Sydney Sweeney (the ScarJo of her generation? I can see it) did a similar thing at the festival, pairing a white slip dress with a baby blue Miu Miu bra that was clearly meant to be seen. Somewhat similar to the bright magenta meant-to-be-seen bra Miu Miu put Nathalie Emmanuel in. Like we said: trend alert. Sexy without being obvious, just the hint of lingerie; plus, you can rock a strapless shape without constantly having to check on the girls all night. Win-win!.
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, too, embraced the emerging silhouette du jour, in Fendi couture. Yep, that’s a bra-like triangle top and spaghetti straps on her gown. It was even the red carpet for the same movie, so be glad she and Scarlett Johansson went with different color palettes, or this could have been awkward.
Off-topic: Is…that…a bedazzled carabiner? Does…Fendi…know…what those mean?
Okay, we’re doing it! Someone get Zendaya into one of these immediately! Do we have eyes on Anya Taylor-Joy?
Sadly, this trend has not trickled down yet, so I can’t buy a version of it on Nasty Gal, but I think I have some sequins and an old bra and a strapless cocktail dress around here somewhere…. A little thread and a glue gun and we should be in business!
