Gwyneth Paltrow slammed superhero movies for lacking originality during her appearance on YouTube talk show Hot Ones.
On Thursday, the actress — who famously starred in the Iron Man movies and retired from Marvel in 2019 because she felt a ‘bit old’ — said there is more of a focus on quantity than quality nowadays, adding that there can only be ‘so many good ones that feel truly original’.
During the episode, host Sean Evans, 37, asked her to share her thoughts about a comment American Fiction director Cord Jefferson made at the Oscars pushing for Hollywood to invest in smaller, more independent projects.
Paltrow, 51, agreed, noting the increase of superhero movies and decrease in ‘quality or specificity or real point-of-views’ as one example of the need for ‘more diversity of art’.
‘If I look at the industry as a whole, there’s this sort of big push into superhero movies,’ Paltrow began.

Paltrow, 51, agreed, noting the increase of superhero movies and decrease in ‘quality or specificity or real point-of-views’ as one example of the need for ‘more diversity of art’. As for her own superhero past she said she ‘sometimes laments the fact’
‘I mean, you can only make so many good ones that feel truly original and yet there’s still, you know, always trying to reach as many people as possible, which sometimes hinders quality or specificity or real point-of-views,’ she said.
She also said that movies she worked on in the past would not be greenlit as they were back then.
‘So, I mean, you’re absolutely right,’ she continued. ‘I grew up doing those movies and I sometimes lament the fact. Like, I look back at some of the movies I made in the ’90s and think that just wouldn’t get made now.’
She emphasized that independent films help increase ‘diversity of art’ compared to blockbuster hits.
‘I do think that you do get more diversity of art when there’s less at stake, and people can express their true voice and make a film the way they want to make it. And then, I think those are generally the more resonant ones.’
Previously, Paltrow famously starred as Robert Downey Jr.’s love interest Pepper Potts in the Iron Man movies.
During her appearance on Hot Ones, Paltrow also impressed Evans as she killed a fly with her bare hands.
She prove she is a woman of many talents during a hilarious interview on the YouTube talk show as she pushed her taste buds to the extreme.

In addition to eating some of the spiciest wings in the world, with only minimal discomfort and no tears shed, the 51-year-old Oscar winner also managed to get rid of an unwanted intruder, who get buzzing into their interview
In addition to eating some of the spiciest wings in the world during her interview with only minimal discomfort and no tears shed, Paltrow also managed to get rid of an unwanted intruder, who kept buzzing into their interview.
After first spying the fly hovering close to her food and hot sauce, she swatted it away and laughed while declaring to the host that the bug would not become a part of her ‘tasting menu.’
Not even 30 seconds later as the insect flew in front of her, again, the mother-of-two showed off her quick reflexes as she killed it with her bare hands.
‘Die b**ch,’ she yelled triumphantly, before wiping her hands on her jeans.
The Goop founder, who prefaced the interview by revealing her 17-year-old son Moses Martin was a huge fan of Evans’ show, was an open book as she played a game of ‘fact or fiction’ based on rumors about herself.
During the segment, she confirmed that her 1996 film Emma put then-President Bill Clinton to sleep at a White House screening.
‘He was snoring right in front of me,’ she recalled, with a chuckle. ‘I was like, ‘Wow I guess this is going to be a real hit movie.”
She continued: ‘But it was! So, f**k you, Bill Clinton!’

The Contagion actress also revealed it was true that Kiefer Sutherland babysat her and her brother, Jake Paltrow, while her mom, Blythe Danner, was performing in a play at Williamstown Theater Festival, where ‘he was an apprentice.’
As she discussed her career, Paltrow pointed out that a lot of the films she made in the Nineties and early 2000s, like her 2001 flick Shallow Hal, would ‘not get made now.’
The businesswoman, who is married to Brad Falchuk, also insisted that she never intended for her wellness company to be ‘provocative.’
‘I think you can only change culture by being provocative whether you mean to or not…we always say we believe that we’re provocateur in the cause of good. So it’s not for its own sake but really to bring more agency and individuality forward,’ she said of the subject.
In response to Evans’ question about how she nailed her British accent for Shakespeare in Love, for which she won an Academy Award, Paltrow credited her history of ‘making prank calls.’
‘I had grown up you know, making prank calls, doing accents… but it turns out to do it properly you have to relearn how to speak. The English accent is so different,’ she explained. ‘I think you really get the opportunity to use the language and really hear because it’s so different when you’re in an academic setting trying to learn as opposed to being in conversation.’
She also walked Evans through her skin care routine, which he applied to his face as she instructed him on how to use her products.
After coaching him on how to wash his face with a green juice cleanser, he praised her for getting through all her spicy wings.
‘You stood in the face of that challenge and you won, you conquered, and now there’s nothing left to do!’ he said as they prepared to end the interview.
