Angel Reese is once again in the spotlight, but this time it’s not for a stellar performance. After her team suffered a major loss at the hands of Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever, Reese is facing a new round of criticism.

During the game on August 30, the Fever took control in the second half and ended up with a 27-point lead late in the fourth quarter. Despite the outcome being pretty clear, Reese stayed on the court until the end and managed to secure a WNBA record by making a layup with only 1:32 remaining in the game. This basket marked her 23rd double-double of the season, setting the all-time single-season record among rookies.

However, the way she achieved this record didn’t sit well with some. Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports was quick to point out that Reese stayed in the game late while Clark was pulled out well before the end. Clark, who scored 31 points and dished out 12 assists, received a standing ovation from the crowd when she left the court. Portnoy expressed his amusement, saying, “Kinda funny watching Angel chase her double-double record during the final 4 minutes of a 30 pt blowout while Caitlin checked out 2 hours ago to a standing O on the road.”

This move didn’t go unnoticed by others either, with many suggesting that Reese’s late shot attempts cheapened her accomplishment. It’s not the first time Reese has faced criticism either; she’s been accused of stat-padding throughout her rookie season for staying in games late to record double-doubles.

Reese sets record amidst criticism and controversy

It’s understandable why some people are questioning Reese’s decision to stay in the game and chase her record during such a lopsided loss. While it’s impressive that she secured a rookie record, it’s important to consider the context in which it happened. The focus should always be on sportsmanship and team play, and some feel that Reese’s actions may have detracted from that.

On the other hand, it’s worth noting that Reese’s determination and drive to set a new record should also be acknowledged. It takes a lot of effort and skill to achieve such a feat, and her commitment to staying on the court until the end shouldn’t be overlooked.

In sports, there will always be debates and differing opinions on players’ actions and decisions. It’s part of what makes sports so engaging for fans. While Reese’s late-game actions have sparked criticism, it’s also a testament to her competitive spirit and desire to leave a mark in the league.
